We must abandon national rivalries for the time being and have a homogeneous and concerted response globally against the pandemic that is attacking both human health and the world economy.
We are at a time when, despite all the controversy surrounding the emergence and development of this pandemic, one thing is certain: it is violently attacking both human health and the world economy.
I usually say that economics in the broadest sense of the term is like the armor of a knight, made up of links or in other words small or large individual entities linked together. The strength of the whole depends on each of them. The life behind them depends on how they manage to cooperate.
That is why we need a solution adapted to such a blow. Of course, there are areas that have suffered less and others that have suffered more, as well as areas that are strongly accelerated by the current crisis. However, the feeling of unpredictability and insecurity will affect consumption to such an extent that without concerted and intelligent action, everyone will lose sooner or later.
A solution that leaves no one behind is the kind of solution that can succeed in overcoming such a crisis situation. A homogeneous and concerted response at a global level, in which to abandon national rivalries for the time being, is the one expected from a species that considers itself above the others and that causes nature itself to compete.
There is great global pressure at the moment and the pandemic is just one of them. Will humanity be able to avoid the “Thucydides trap” – as Graham Allison describes it – generated by China’s rivalry and potential overtaking of US economic power? Will humanity be able to master the transition from analog to digital and beyond to artificial intelligence? Will humanity succeed in generating a global context in which to live without racial differences and cultural and religious oppression? What effect does it have on the planet that two people who would end their tenure are fighting for the most important global function? Legitimate questions for any inhabitant of the planet, questions that do not seem to concern the current leaders more than a discussion over a tea…
Every business has its relevance in the complex system of the world economy and we must each be responsible for our business, whether we run them or are shareholders or work there. Of course, coordinated state support is likely to support our efforts, but no one has a greater responsibility than us to manage the crisis, take the necessary measures, protect and act boldly and responsibly.
We are aware that there is no protection promised by anyone against such crises and that is why it is extremely important to be aware and act courageously and consistently against the values we have so often used, especially to promote the image. Here comes the time when we must prove that we truly believe in these values, that we have the strength to act in line with them! I sincerely believe that this is the way and I am optimistic that especially those companies that are consistent with the purpose for which they were created and with the real values that inspired them will succeed in coming out stronger from this attempt.
As with any attack, how important you are to survive and finish victorious is how you prepare and execute your counterattack. We too must not prostrate ourselves in the way of this treacherous virus and the path to finding a vaccine at best solves the fight against Sars-CoV-2 and not in general the fight against these ruthless viral agents. I believe that first of all we have a lot to learn from the mistakes we have made and I am referring first of all to the way we have treated nature and the feeling that we are above it.
Then I think we need to understand that the pace of continuous acceleration and running away from ourselves is not a panacea, that we need to find other ways and economic engines.
Last but not least, we have the chance to correct mistakes now, when the pace slows down, when the fear of the image fades, it is time for big corrections. In this way we should come out stronger, more prepared, more aware. Although it is a life and death struggle for some of us, courage and determination, but not unconsciousness and disrespect, will sustain our path forward.
We are fast approaching the end of a year that we will remember for generations to come. On the one hand, we do not see the full development of the damage already produced, on the other hand, a new year full of unpredictability awaits us. The usual holiday hustle and bustle may turn into peace and even loneliness, family visits into virtual friends and empty New Year’s Eve streets, frustration instead of joy, stress instead of relaxation.
