“In the period that has passed since the revolution, Romanians have benefited from a cost of energy, both electrical and thermal, clearly lower than the EU average and even compared to our western neighbors. In competition with Bulgaria, energy prices were among the lowest, influencing the industry and the daily basket of household consumers. Of course, this information can be misleading as long as we do not bring into question the purchasing power of the Romanian compared to that of other EU citizens. In this case, we find somewhat surprising that a Romanian bears this cost more heavily than a German citizen, which is very relevant,” says Bodea.

The game in an economic community such as the one created by the EU cannot be other than that of openness, interconnection at all levels and alignment with a common set of rules. Such a game creates both opportunities and threats, and the role of each government is to capitalize on opportunities and find ways to manage threats, so that citizens’ lives are better. In this complicated context, Romania has chosen to assume its proposed targets, align regulations and open the market. A first stage was 2020 with its targets suggestively named 20/20/20, an occasion on which our country managed to show its ability to achieve its assumed objectives and even to exceed some of them.

“Both through the targets proposed by the Green Deal program and through the new Fit for 55 proposal, the entire European Union is tense in a concerted effort to conquer a position of superiority over climate change. Of course, the question is: what will be the impact on the lives of Romanians generated by this effort and how can we benefit from this transition to a cleaner economy?”
